Overview

I’m behavioral scientist, teacher, and lifelong learner who…

Studies communication and cognition in fast-paced, high-stakes settings;

Creates experiential learning environments where people build meaning, skills and knowledge at the leading edge of their capabilities;

Examines my own cognitive routines and emotional reactions in order to better understand how people learn and change (or not);

Thrives in connection with the community of innovative clinicians, educators, social scientists, and technical experts with whom I work and learn.

Research

Debriefing— what are the qualities of after-action conversations that best allow people to reflect, learn, and change?

Speaking up—what facilitates or inhibits clinicians from speaking up when they notice lapses in patient care?

Problem-solving— how do habits of mind and speech interact with features of the environment generate effective or disastrous diagnosis and action in high-stakes settings?

Background

I am a graduate of Harvard College, studied system dynamics at the MIT Sloan School of Management as a visiting scholar and received my doctorate in management from Boston College.   I draw on ten years of research in high-hazard industries, as well as my experience as a rock-climber and world-class rower to teach clinical trainees and faculty techniques for improving problem solving and communication in high-stakes clinical settings. I publish in clinical and management journals, and lecture both nationally and internationally on debriefing, feedback, and diagnostic problem solving.
