IMS Comprehensive INSTRUCTOR Workshop for Obstetrics

The obstetrics track of the Comprehensive Course is designed for nurses, physicians and midwives who are involved in a current or prospective simulation program that emphasizes obstetrics. This course is an intensive immersion in healthcare simulation with experienced leaders at the forefront of the field, and covers all high-level elements and concepts involved in running a simulation program in obstetrics. Attendees join a growing community of Institute graduates who are positioned as leaders in the field.

Daily formats vary and include simulation scenarios, lectures, small and large group discussions, case studies, and practical exercises with feedback. The week also includes two evening social events that provide additional opportunities for networking and experience sharing.

Patient simulation: history and context
Operating a simulation program
Creating a challenging and safe learning environment
Teaching clinical thinking and skills
Teaching teamwork and crisis resource management
Developing debriefing skills
Preparing, building, conducting, and debriefing realistic simulation scenarios
Avoiding simulation pitfalls and ineffective debriefing techniques
Introducing behavioral and educational research paradigms
Advancing simulation within one’s institution

To apply for this course, you must:

Fill out the online application form and email the following two documents to Paul Montgomery:

1. A one page proposal for an institutional project you plan to develop during the workshop, where you: describe the current problem that your project will address; define the beneficiaries and expected accomplishments; identify the necessary resources and barriers to implementation; and escribe how you will evaluate whether your project has created an improvement.

2. A 1-2 page biosketch (not your complete CV), including: your goals for attending the workshop; your position, specialty, and professional experience; your educational background; and any educational activities over the past 5 years.

Enrollment and cancellation policy
After you have submitted your application materials as described above, you should expect to receive a decision by email within two weeks. Upon acceptance, you must reconfirm your intention to attend by replying to the acceptance email. Tuition is due two weeks after receiving your confirmation. When a class fills up, we start a waiting list. If you must cancel and another candidate can fill your seat, we will refund your tuition less $100 for administration and processing. If we cannot fill your seat, we will refund half your tuition.
