CMS offers courses, in partnership with Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology, for those who want to develop and maintain high-quality medical simulation programs within their organizations. Class size is limited for all courses and admissions are processed on a rolling basis. Early applications are encouraged.

We are offering an Obstetrics Track in our March 2010 Comprehensive Instructor Workshop in Medical Simulation. This Track is intended for physicians, nurses, and midwives involved in a current or prospected simulation program that will emphasize obstetrics.

Comprehensive Instructor Workshop in Medical Simulation |

Course Dates: August 17 - 22, 2009 (Wait List); September 14 - 19, 2009;
October 5 - 10, 2009; November 2 - 7, 2009; March 29 - April 3, 2010: May 3 - 8, 2010; August 16 - 21, 2010.

Target audience: Educators and leaders of a current or prospective simulation program.
Objective: This course is an intensive immersion experience in medical simulation. Experienced leaders at the forefront of the field conduct the course which covers all high-level elements and concepts involved in running a simulation program. Attendees will join a growing community of Institute graduates positioned as leaders in the field.
Format: 5 1⁄2 days. The daily formats vary and include simulation scenarios, lectures, small and large group discussions, case studies, and practical exercises with feedback. There will also be two evening social events providing additional opportunities for networking and experience sharing.
Topics include:
• Patient simulation: history and context
• Operating a simulation program
• Teaching clinical thinking and skills
• Teaching teamwork and crisis resource management
• Developing debriefing skills
• Introducing behavioral and educational research paradigms
• Advancing simulation within one’s institution
Course enrollment is a 3-step process!

Applicants for the Comprehensive Workshop must submit the following two documents to Paul Montgomery
1. A one page proposal for an institutional project you plan to develop during the workshop.
- Describe the current problem that your project will address.
- Define the beneficiaries and expected accomplishments.
- Identify the necessary resources and barriers to implementation.
- Describe how you will evaluate whether your project has created an improvement.
2. A 1-2 page biosketch including (Do not attach your complete CV):
- Your goals for attending the workshop
- Your position, specialty, and professional experience.
- Educational background and any educational activities over the past 5 years.
CME's:Physicians receive 47.25 Continuing Medical Education (CME) for completeing this Comprehensive Course.
Enrollment and cancellation policy: Upon acceptance, we would appreciate you reconfirming your intention to attend by reply email. Tuition will be due two weeks after receiving your acceptance. When a class fills up, we start a waiting list. If you must cancel and another candidate can fill your seat, we will refund your tuition less $100 for administration and processing. If we cannot fill your seat, you will forfeir half your tuition, we will refund the remaining half.

Target audience: Educators who teach clinical, behavioral, and cognitive skills using medical simulation
Objective: This course draws from the disciplines of aviation, health care, psychology, experiential learning, and organizational behavior to explore a variety of simulator-based teaching methods, applicable across the health-profession educational spectrum, including undergraduate and graduate medical, nursing and allied health domains.
Format: 3 days. The workshop combines didactic and experiential learning with practice and feedback to focus on critical thinking and crisis management.
Topics include:
• Building a challenging and safe learning environment
• Utilizing effective debriefing techniques and avoiding ineffective ones
• Preparing, building, conducting and debriefing high-fidelity simulation scenarios

Target audience: This course is intended for those who have completed the Comprehensive workshop in Meducal Simulation or Instructor Training: "Simulation as a Teaching Tool"offering.
Objective: This course is designed to help prepare leaders in simulation for the challenges and opportunities of effecting significant reform in healthcare education. We will explore the methods and tools that leaders can utilize to effectively navigate the complex networks required to produce lasting organizational change.
Format: The daily format varies and will include advanced leadership modules; advanced debriefing practice; discussion and demonstration of special scenarios, e.g., medical error, delivering bad news, equipment failure, ethical problems, etc.; and sharing of progress and problems. Evening social events will provide additional opportunities for networking, fellowship and support.
Topics include:
• Strategic frameworks and leadership tools
• Organizational politics and networking opportunities in medical education
• Developing effective simulation initiatives in healthcare
